Preparation &
Handling
1. Open skins flat
and salt the flesh side thoroughly using a fine grade salt (a skin
the size of a deer hide will require 5 to 10 lbs
of salt while a cow may require 20 to 30 lbs of salt). Leave
the skin sit salted for 4-6 hours, until flesh & fat
are slightly firm. DO NOT
ALLOW SALTED SKIN TO FREEZE ONCE SALTING BEGINS!
2. Scrape off all
flesh, fat, bones, and split the tail if present.
3. Salt again
covering all edges, wrinkles, etc.
4. Allow skin to
dehydrate on an incline so that fluids drain away
from the skin for 24 to 48 hours. DO NOT ALLOW
FLUIDS TO PUDDLE
5. Shake or sweep
off loose salt and re-salt again with clean salt
(same quantity as in step 1). Salt
should remain on skin for 4 to 5 days. If skin
does not dry use a fan to circulate the air. This
will aid the drying process.
6. When the skin
gets crusty (but not hard) shake off all loose salt.
If fur still has damp areas use paper towels to
dry as best as possible.
7. To package for
shipping, fold skin hair side to hair side as
necessary to fit in an adequately sized cardboard
box. DO NOT ROLL THE SKIN! The cardboard
box should be lined with newspaper only.
NO PLASTIC, SHREDDED PAPER, FOAM, OR PEANUTS
SHOULD BE USED!
8. Count your
skins accurately and enclose a packing list filled
out with box contents, name, address, and phone
number. Our Shipping Form is provided for
your convenience.
